Welcome to the World, Noah!

I’m not going to lie, dear Reader.  Being a newborn photographer in Pittsburgh really is an awesome job!  Sure, I spend several hours sweating in an 80 degree studio posing babies down to the smallest detail, while the danger of getting pooped on is always imminent.  But I also get to hold tiny babies all the time!  And when all my patience is rewarded with a little smile…*sigh*.  Yep, I have the best job in the world.

Little Noah was 21 days old when he came to the studio for his newborn session.  He looks comfy in his wrap for this image, but it wasn’t long before he busted out of there, lol.  He wanted to be free!

I love how he is looking right into his mom’s eyes.

Another baby smile!

Michael and Paula, congratulations on the arrival of your little one!!

Eoghan is 1!

Remember little Eoghan from his newborn photography session?  Recently I had the pleasure of photographing his one year session!  How the time has flown by–has it been a year already??  How you’ve grown, little Eoghan!

Peekaboo!

I love doing a cake smash with my one-year-old babies!  They have the best time squishing their little hands into the icing.

Time to get clean!

Happy Birthday, Little Eoghan!

Aaron - SOOO adorable! I love how happy he is!

Newborn Photography Safety | TLC Tuesdays #6

Things are not always as they seem, dear Reader.  In the world of newborn photography, this is often the case.  As you know, when it comes to photographing little ones, I am very passionate about safety.  Sometimes parents and new photographers may see these amazing or seemingly implausible shots by other photographers, and think that what you see is how things were actually photographed; however,  it’s important to understand that Photoshop plays a big part in these images.  So, I thought you might like to get a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes.  I usually don’t remember to take a quick pullback picture, but in the images below, there is enough of the surroundings to get an idea of how things were done.  Today I will show you a before and after of little Declan in a stork pouch hanging from a tree branch.

First we have a  pussy willow branch that my mother-in-law gave to me; I photographed it last spring in front of a cream colored backdrop, suspended with coat hangers from another backdrop stand.  I would have used thread or clear string, but this is what I had on hand!  SOOC (Straight out of camera)

Next we have Declan in a sling that is tied securely to a short segment of tree branch.  Mom and Dad are on either side holding up the branch; as you can see, they are both within range to easily put their hand on baby to stabilize him if needed.  At no time is he suspended more than an inch above a large beanbag; what I am looking for is a clean edge on the bottom of the sling to work with.  Here is the image I used, SOOC.

And now through the magic of television (a.k.a. Photoshop), here is the finished image.

I hope you enjoyed this little installment of TLC Tuesdays.  Remember, when it comes to newborn photography, safety first!

Welcome to the World, Little Declan

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the arrival of this little bundle ever since I photographed his mommy and daddy’s maternity session in January.  He is just perfect, and I am super excited to show you the images from his newborn photography session.  Here he is, just 8 days old; and he slept like a champ through most of the session!

Averi’s First Year Cake Smash

Having a first year cake smash photo session is so much fun!  I had the delight of doing this little peanut’s newborn photos, and I can’t believe how much she has changed in just one year.  Could she be any cuter??  I submit that she could not.

Before we got to the cake smash, which we saved for last, we took some nice photos in her prettiest birthday outfits.

Don’t you just love the way babies first try to kiss?  They look like they are going to eat your face, haha!  So cute!

And now the good part…time to start smashing!

Happy Birthday, little Averi!

Robin Eiszler - So cute!

Letters to My Daughter | February 2013

Here is letter #2 in a blog series called “Letters to Our Daughters”, a blog circle of lovely and talented photographers from all over.  Once a month we have committed to writing a letter to our daughters, to create a keepsake of heartfelt thoughts that we and our daughters will cherish.  If you’d like to read their stories, too, you can click on the next link in the circle and visit Brenda’s Blog.

These images were taken on a whim when a beautiful snowfall began one afternoon.  I am so glad we took the time and effort; these are my favorite portraits of her to date.  My little snow angel…

What I Like About You

My Dearest Little One,

I like how you march to the beat of a different drum.  While all the other girls talk about princesses and Barbie dolls, you talk about Spider Man and try to think of ways to catch the Loch Ness Monster.  I like how you don’t fit into a mold.  I like your spunk and your goofy sense of humor.  There’s no one else in the world like you!  I hope that as you grow up, you can ignore the pressure to be like everyone else, and continue to follow your own star.

I like how you have a special compassion for animals.  You talk about growing up to be a veterinarian or animal medic at the zoo.  And a rock star like Lady Gaga.  At the same time.  You have a lot of dreams, and I can’t wait to see who you will be, what you will achieve.

I like your zest for life, your spirit.  You are passionate in everything you do; you want to soak up all that life has to offer.  And you are always up for an adventure!

I like how you dance like nobody’s watching.  You dance with a freedom that most people will never know.  I hope that is something you will be able to do all your life.

I like your creativity.  You have such an imagination, and I hope you never lose your sense of wonder at the world.

I like the kindness in your soul.  I know your heart, and it is beautiful.  You are sweet and kind and good.

I like you and love you more than anything in the whole world, little girl!

Love,

Mom

A Sweet Valentine Offer

Meet Piper, my faithful, spunky, and always-entertaining Dachshund!  Well, we can’t be sure, but he might be a Scotteenie (that’s part Scotty, part Weenie).  Whatever he is, he’s 100% loveable!  And he has a special Valentine offer just for you.

Is your child growing up before your eyes?  Don’t wait.  Capture all those adorable nuances that you love, right now.  What about a family portrait for a meaningful Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gift?  Are you expecting a baby?  Newborn sessions should take place in the first 10 days after birth, so start planning ahead for your baby’s first portrait.

If you’ve been thinking about scheduling a photo session in the coming months, now is the perfect time to book it.  Piper thinks it’s an awesome time.  And look at that face–would he steer you wrong?

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Big hugs,
Sandy
